Dorothy Hicks

Dorothy Mae Hicks, 100, of Chillicothe,, MO passed away Friday, March 4, 2011. She was a resident of Morningside Assisted Living since June 15, 2001. She was born January 9, 1911 in Livingston County near  Sampsel, MO, the first child of James A. and Maude Harriett Bills Cooper. She graduated from Lock Springs High School in 1929 and on December 18, 1932 married Joseph M. Hicks at the home of Rev. H. E. Burton in Lock Springs. Mr. Hicks died April 21, 1978.

Mrs. Hicks taught school at the rural Raulie school and later was a house parent at the Chillicothe Correctional School for Girls from 1964 to 1976.

The Hicks’ spent most of their live in the Lock Springs community. In 1963 they moved to Chillicothe. Mrs. Hicks was a member of the United Methodist Church, Naomi Ruth Circle, Eastern Star 50 years, Hospital Auxiliary, Chillicothe Garden Club, Senior Volunteer and 4-H Leader..

Survivors are one daughter, Carolyn Stephens and husband, Gerald of Chillicothe and one son, James M. Hicks of Red Oak, TX. Seven grandsons, Reid Stephens and wife, Natalie of Chillicothe, Scott Stephens and wife Sherry of Chillicothe, Brad Hicks of Athens TX, Brian Hicks and wife, Akemi, of Lawton, TX, John Hicks and wife, Melanie of Red Oak, TX, David Hicks and wife, Jill, of Kansas City, MO, Mark Hicks and wife, Melissa, of Moore, OK; twenty-one great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; three siblings, Kathryn Tolen of Jamesport, MO, Donna Lou Slater of Trenton, MO and Bill Cooper of Chillicothe; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Mildred Bolen and Mary Elizabeth Gordon, and one brother, Wesley Cooper.

Funeral services will be at the United Methodist Church 1414 Walnut St., Chillicothe, MO at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2011.

Burial will be at Edgewood Cemetery, Chillicothe, MO

There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe, MO.
