Lois Caroline (Counts) McCain, 93, of Utica, Mo. passed away Wednesday, November 05, 2014 at her home in Utica.
Lois was born June 27, 1921 in Henson, Mo., to Frank Counts and Lulu Henderson Counts. The family moved to Kansas City, Mo. in 1922.
Lois Married Ralph McCain at First Calvary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo. on June 27, 1961. He preceded her in death in 2011 after 49 years of marriage.
Lois attended Franklin Grade School, West Junior High & graduated from Westport High School in 1938 in Kansas City, Mo.; & received a BS Degree from State University of N.Y. in Oswego, N.Y. in 1949. She was vice-president of the student body & Arethusa Sorority; editor of the college newspaper, the Oswegonian; college reporter for the local newspaper, Palladium-Times.
Lois worked at K.C. Power & Light Co.; North American Bobler Plant; First Calvary Baptist Church; Martin School 1949-1961 in Kansas City, Mo. & Field School in Chillicothe in 1962 and retiring in 1982.
As a teacher at Martin School she moved into a house next to the school & started Our House Community Center at 2516 Rochester, Kansas City, Mo. After the house was vandalized, the Junior Chamber of Commerce took on the project of getting a large community center built on the corner of Rochester & N. Prospect; Miss Counts continued to be the director until 1961. Besides teaching, she was leader of Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, basketball & baseball coach participating in the Baptist League; G.A., Y.W. A., Sunday School teacher & Junior Choir director at Valley Memorial Chapel. She was given the Junior Chamber of Commerce Youth Service Award & was the second person to receive the Missouri Fraternal Order of Eagles Civic Service Award in 1956.
In Chillicothe, she was a member, secretary & vice-president of CTA; member of MSTA; Livingston Co. Retired Teachers Assoc. acting as secretary, vice-president & president, active in Retired Senior Volunteer Progran & received the first Livingston RSVP Woman Volunteer of the Year Award in 1973; member of the Lamda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Lois taught adult & youth Bible classes, G.A. leader; VBS worker at Utica Baptist Church. At Community Baptist Church she continued teaching adult & youth Bible classes, VBS, served as church clerk. Lois served as director & a teacher for the C.L.I.A. Youth Group for over 40 years.
Lois wrote “Utica Items” & feature stories for the Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune in Chillicothe.
Survivors include 4 nieces, Judy Skinner-KS, Kay Denny-OH, Nancy (Ward) Sneed-MO, Linda (James) Boggs-VA; 3 nephews, Warren (Judy) Williams-OH, Frank (Kathy) Counts-FL, Patrick (Linda) Counts-WA. 8 grandnieces, Amy Pina-OH, Patti (Alan) Bloodsworth-FL, Ashley Counts-MO, Lindsey (Daniel) Mueller-MO, Jenny (Scott) Little-NC, Stephanie Counts-NC, Jane (Kelly Derricki-Va, Catherine (John) Bacha-VA; 2 grandnephews, Bill (Kelly) Skinner-MO, Jim Skinner-MO; 5 great-grandnieces, Frankie & Samantha Skinner-KS, Celinda & Olivia Pina-OH, Kira Bloodsworth- FL, 6 great-grandnephews, Xavier Bloodsworth-FL, Robert & Dylan Bacha-VA, James Derricki-VA, Sidney Mueller-MO, William Little-NC.
She was preceded in death by husband, Ralph McCain; parents, Frank & Lulu Counts; brothers, Harold (Dorothy), Sidney (Evelyn), Frank, Jr. Counts; sisters, Beulah Counts (Jay) Rudolph, & Edna Counts (Cecil) Williams; sister in law, Jeannie Marie McCain.
Lois’s family would like to especially thank her loving care givers, Brenda and Jerry Hullinger and Barbara Hightower. They would also like to thank all her friends and students for their prayers, caring calls and visits throughout the years.

Burial will be at Utica Cemetery, Utica MO.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe, MO.
