Margaret L. Bonderer of Chillicothe Missouri died Sunday December 30, 2012 at Morningside Center in Chillicothe. Margaret was a lifelong resident of Livingston County Missouri.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Chillicothe United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Chillicothe. There will be family visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 PM January 6, 2013 at the church.
Margaret Lee Grouse was born February 20, 1918 at Springhill in Livingston County Missouri. She was the daughter of David Fredrick “Fred” Grouse and Ruth Marion (Thorne) Grouse.
Margaret always knew that she wanted to be a teacher. She began her own education at the one room Sneed School. Upon graduation from Chillicothe High School in 1934, Margaret asked to be the teacher at Sneed School.
Even though she started her teaching career at a very young age with only a high school diploma, Margaret continued her own education at the same time as she was teaching others. She ultimately acquired her Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s Degree and nearly completed a doctorate in education and counseling.
Education was very important to Margaret. She taught at many levels – in rural schools, city schools and at the Chillicothe Industrial Home. She taught elementary, high school, and adults. She helped people to pass their GED exams. She even helped some of her fellow teachers obtain advanced degrees. In the final years of her official career, Margaret was an elementary school counselor. After retirement, she continued to administer tests for the school district.
Even years after her retirement, former students continued to stop Margaret on the street to thank her for making a difference in their lives.
After a lengthy courtship, Margaret married Gerald G. Bonderer, January 17, 1942. They had one child – Lana.
Margaret and Gerald loved to dance – especially to the music of the Big Bands. They spent many a night at the ballrooms throughout the Midwest. The Frog Hop in St Joseph, The Gables in Trenton, and the Pla Mor in Kansas city were favorite spots unless a nationally known orchestra happened to be appearing in a ballroom within a day’s drive.
Margaret and Gerald enjoyed travel, visiting most of the United States and much of Europe.
Margaret loved playing cards. She spent many an hour playing various games with family and friends. But her greatest love was playing Bridge – playing nearly every day in recent years.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mildred Walker and by Gerald, her husband of 57 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Lana L. Henry (Warren) of Kansas City, Missouri, her brother Robert Grouse (Imogene) of Chillicothe, Missouri and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
