Mary Esther Cross, 76, of Chillicothe, formerly of Lock Springs, MO, and Freeport, IL passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Indian Hills in Chillicothe, under the care of St. Luke’s Hospice.
Mary was born in Nashville, North Carolina on June 6, 1936 the daughter of William Edward Green and Lena Chambers Green.
She worked for 12 years at Freeport Memorial Hospital and was also employed by Pinkerton Security.
On September 16, 1976 she married Eugene R. Cross and they resided in Freeport, Illinois.
In 1989 Mary and Eugene moved to Lock Springs, MO to enjoy their retirement years. He preceded her in death in 1999.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Chillicothe. She had a beautiful soprano voice and would sing for her church and for other area churches.
Mary enjoyed helping others and was always faithful in reading her Bible.
She is survived by a daughter, Arlene Masters (Ralph Lawson) of Arizona; son, Douglas Cross; stepson Clyde Cross and stepdaughter, Yolanda Cross of Freeport, IL; foster daughter, Mindy Marcum; sisters, Mamie McKinny (John) of South Hampton NJ, Anna Mae Whittington of Belvidere IL, Susan Singh of Rockford IL, Margaret Doughty (Russell) of Troy WV, Sharan Crenshaw of Rockford IL; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Barbara and Tom Williams of Lock Springs MO; and her adopted friends and family at Indian Hills.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Eugene; stepson, Roland Cross; five brothers, Washington, James, Clarence, Hubert and Oliver; sisters, Elsa Green and Bessie Schwartz;
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Luke’s Hospice and left at the funeral home or mailed to Heritage Funeral Home, 3141 N. Washington, Chillicothe MO 64601.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe.
There will be no scheduled visitation.
Burial will be at Lock Springs Cemetery, Lock Springs, MO.
