Mary Elizabeth Plowman

June 2, 1943 — March 11, 2025

Chillicothe

Mary Elizabeth O’Dell Plowman was born June 2, 1943, the only child of Marshall Andrew O’Dell and Elizabeth Mary (Moorshead) O’Dell. She was the devoted wife of Darrell Eugene Plowman and loving mother of Ernest Eugene and Sherri Lynn. Mary lived in Chillicothe her entire married life. She and Darrell cherished close friendships with Diane and Wendal Kerns, Joe and Nellie Ogan, and Bill and Sharon McNally.

Mary was a graduate of Chillicothe High School, class of 1961 and married Darrell on April 10th, 1964 at Bridal Cave in Camdenton. At the age of 18, she was inducted into the Chillicothe Order of Eastern Star by Worthy Matron and close family friend, Nellie Ogan. Mary remained a member and supporter for life, 60 plus years. She was the bookkeeper at Plowmans Garage and Lambert Manufacturing Company, Executive Secretary at Missouri Charolais Breeders Association, and Chillicothe Office Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. In 1982, Mary became a substitute, then regular carrier, at the Chillicothe Post Office. She was proud of her job and wanted her patrons to be glad to have her as their carrier. She enjoyed her work and cared for her fellow carriers by treating them with cookies at her whim and cake on their birthdays. They were a fun group of USPS-Missouri Rural Letter Carriers. Mary was Local Union Steward for 27 years, Second District Secretary for 17 years, National Delegate for 5 years, and State Delegate every year of her service. Mary’s greatest passion in life was to pass on Christian Family values from her parents and the love of music from her mother. Mary’s family was her greatest joy and prime interest. Mary supported her children and grandchildren in music festivals, sporting events, hunting, and loved attending their events.

Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church Orchestra, Chillicothe Community Orchestra, and Fine Arts Council for 24 years. She became a Christian at age 12 years old at the Methodist Church. Later, she became a member of the First Baptist Church. Mary loved a good joke, even at her own expense! She also loved antique cars, the Chiefs, card games, family time, old movies, her pet cats and dogs, and bowling. Mary made amazing cakes of all kinds, including intricate wedding cakes for so many family and close friends.

Mary is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, Darrell, of the home, her children, Ernie Plowman of Springfield, MO, Sherri Plowman Mullikin of Springfield, MO. Grandchildren, Kaleb (Ioly) Mullikin of Salt Lake City, UT, Skyler Avila of Springfield, MO, and Chloe Hoel (Nathan) of Chillicothe, MO, her three great grandchildren, Jax, Jett, and Isla Avila of Springfield, MO, her brothers in law, sisters in law, and her nieces and nephew.
